The Centre  was named and opened  by Ms Jane Davidson, Minister for Education and  Lifelong Learning on  the 9th October 03 together with Mr Albert Owen M.P.  Mr Ieuan Wyn Jones A.M. and Mr Richard Parry Jones, Director of Education, all who paid tribute to the  quality of the refurbishment and to the facilities that would be on offer to  the users.

Ms Davidson emphasised the opportunity  for  an extension of learning  programme to  ALL  ages within the community and emphasised  the  differing levels of provision which would be on offer.  IT in all its different forms, learning languages, local history, Welsh for beginners  followed by conversational courses and  any others where demand  was indicated.

Guests  were those who had made contributions in various ways -  funding, professional advice and physical assistance   in the  development  of the scheme from the early stages  - as long as five years ago.  My thanks go to  the Committee  who have been most supportive throughout the many rejections  and disappointments  and who encouraged me in the continuance of our aim for a  new type of Centre providing  facilities  to provide for  all ages  in Lifelong Learning,  from which  to gain extra qualifications and abilities and  thereby at no cost to themselves enabling  us to  obtain  funds  in the way of rental  of the rooms to pursue the interests of the younger element of  this eastern corner of Ynys Mon/Anglesey.

We are  especially grateful  to Mr Alun Williams,  Mr John Owen, Mr John Coull of Symonds Colwyn Bay  and Mr George O'Dell  the Chartered Architect who, over a period of five years, provided  all the  ever changing designs/plans on a "no grant- no cost" basis.

The  County Council's Youth Office,  headed by Mr Tudur Pritchard,  have been totally supportive from the very early stages  and   we express our gratitude to both him and his staff.

The idea of providing one centre   as  the central point for  the villages of the area   and  the links which  are to be provided between all the youth centres were commended by the speakers   and subsequently by Assembly Youth Inspectors and  the permanency of a  Manager at the  Canolfan  will enable arrangements to be made for organised trips/activities for all the young persons of east Anglesey.

The computer suite has 14 computers and WEA/CAG and Coleg Menai are providing computer  and other education courses.

The next courses are scheduled for  January  as shown below.

Lee Dixon has been appointed  as Centre Manager  and has  taken up his duties from the 1st September 03. The committee warmly welcome him and wish him every success.  We are certain  he will receive the full support of the community of East Anglesey.

Additionally, Lee  will be developing our own range of programmes for the benefit of our youth club members by  providing  homework slots,  fantasy football etc. with qualified supervision. See the information board at the Youth Club for details.

Anyone who is interested in  a subject not  shown in our current curriculum,   should telephone Lee  and if we recruit  sufficient numbers(minimum 8) we will make every effort to  meet your requirements.

It cannot be said too often - but the more that use  the Centre to benefit themselves also, at no extra cost,  automatically  benefit the young people of East-Anglesey.

On November 1st 03 we held a  fund-raising Coffee Morning  and are pleased to announce total receipts amounting to £1,200.11p. We are extremely grateful for the  support shown by the community.

Iorwerth Rowlands.
